Description
Those who are familiar with Vincent van Gogh’s work often cite the buzzing energy of his paintings, as visible in works like “The Starry Night.” But with “Edge of a Wheat Field with Poppies and a Lark,” van Gogh showed a softer side that often came out in paintings created in the final years of his life. Painted just a few years before the artist’s death, this canvas depicts a wheat harvest gently blowing in the wind. The blurry clouds in the sky and appearance of a single bird flying overhead capture that momentary, fleeting feeling present in so many of van Gogh’s paintings. But this particular work has a much gentler and relaxing tone compared to some of his more frenetic subjects. Van Gogh’s Paris period in 1887 is a time of self-discovery and a coming together of all that he learned while in the heart of the art world. As he begins to formulate his own artistic way, his palette becomes brighter, his brushwork more broken. Like the impressionists, Van Gogh takes his subjects from the city’s cafés and boulevards, and the open countryside along the Seine. Through Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, he discovers the stippling technique, also called pointillism, and freely experiments with the style. If you’d like to create a peaceful escape within your home or office, choose “Edge of a Wheat Field with Poppies and a Lark” by Vincent van Gogh. This gorgeous oil painting reproduction captures all the soft, muted tones and careful brushstrokes of the original.
