In this particular version, she is joined by a seated companion, who is likely her older sister, Lydia. We see Mary and Lydia from behind, which is a common theme in Degas’ work. Mary is clearly entranced by the art in the Louvre. She is depicted as quite elegantly put together as she leans up against her umbrella in a pose that highlights her figure and gives her an air of confidence.
