Description

Degas’ Ballerinas Adjusting Their Dresses is another close-up look at a backstage scene at the Paris ballet. The dancers adjust the sleeves on their costumes, looking away from the viewer, as if they are deep in thought at the task at hand and the upcoming show. The dancers themselves take up virtually the entire canvas in this carefully executed recreation. This was one of Degas’ favorite themes and he depicted it many times over, reflecting the dancers’ athleticism, passion and tension. The movements of these dancers are rendered with such specificity that it begs the question whether it is multiple dancers or simply one in motion. Degas eventually became a true master at depicting dancers’ limbs. Either way, the costumes are beautifully recreated in our 20″ x 24″ oil reproduction. The original was completed in 1899.
