American artist Alfred Henry Maurer was a master of modern painting styles, namely fauvism and modernism. The style of les fauves (the wild beasts) is categorized by its strong color, wild brushwork and a focus on simplification and abstraction. Although the artist started off painting in traditional styles, Maurer’s Fauve Still Life is a foray into the fauvism movement, exhibiting vibrant, strident coloring and abstractions. At age 36, Maurer abandoned all other painting styles in favor or fauvism and cubism. After this, the artist began to run in non-conforming circles – becoming friends with Gertrude and Leo Stein, among others – and focused his work on the avant-garde.
