Originally created in 1897 by Claude Monet, The Seine Near Giverny showcases a mastery of the Impressionist style. This painting is part of the artist’s Mornings on the Seine series, which was painted over the course of over a year in France. His focus on painting the same subject over and over allowed him to develop a unique sense of the different lighting and colors that could change from moment to moment in this location. In this piece there’s an incredibly rich palette of autumn colors used throughout the green and brown trees, the pink tinted sky and blue water to create a radiant, glowing atmosphere. The brisk brushstrokes in the sky contrast subtly with the blurred strokes of the water to set a boundary between reality and reflection.
