Nothing quite captures the soft, gentle pleasure of a summer’s day quite like this painting by the legendary French impressionist, Claude Monet in 1875. Summer (also known as Meadow at Bezons) depicts a woman sitting peacefully in a meadow of tall grass, her skirt spread out casually around her. There are two other figures off in the distance. There’s an airy feeling in the piece, with a play on light and shadow in the grass. In his extensive work with landscapes, Monet explored the changing nature of color and light in different settings, and at different times of the day. In this tribute to the season of summer, Monet captures the mood of Bezons, a village in the northwestern suburbs of Paris.
