For nearly 40 years, Edward Hopper and his wife spent their summers on Cape Cod, and his oil paintings of Cape Cod are some of his most well-known works. While the cape has been a popular summer tourist destination for decades, “Cape Cod in October” from 1946 renders the region at a time when only the locals remain. This landscape painting of a single house and surrounding nature, as seen from a passing car, brings to life the relative loneliness of this quieter time.
