This 19th century French artist identified closely with the subject of dance, and more than half of his works depict ballet dancers. Despite the fact that he self-identified as a “realist,” Degas is largely recognized as one of the founders of Impressionism and was obsessed with mastering the art of capturing movement and emotion.
