Yet another ballet dancer gazes off into the distance in Degas’ Dancer in Pink Dress. As such, the viewer’s gaze is also drawn to whatever she is looking at on the left as well. In his paintings of familiar moments like this with dancers, Degas almost invites the viewer to peek along with him with the unspoken assumption that we are not to interrupt her, but rather to simply observe. This particular dancer gently holds a prop as she contemplates her next move. Her pink dress is depicted with soft, sweeping motions, along with other dancers in the background that are harder to make out. That’s in part thanks to Degas’ mastery of pastels. Our talented artists have recreated this style in oil in a 20″ x 24″ recreation.
