Description

“Drug Store” by Edward Hopper is one of the American’s classic urban realism scenes and uses his sense of balance and opposites to great effect. In the 1927 original, Edward Hopper portrays the pharmacy on the corner of a city street at night. The bright colors and early electronic light from this omnipresent 1920s store are offset by the dark shadows that surround it, especially from the next street over. As such, Silber Pharmacy’s welcoming beacon is countered by a sense of foreboding and unease. When portraying architectural objects, Hopper tended to set the scene at night or in the early morning, eliminating the human element and allowing him to focus on architecture and atmosphere. Doing so in “Drug Store” effectively gives the titular building a life of its own, acting as the main character that stands alone against the darkness. The strength of the small little store in this ominous time adds a compelling ambience to this Hopper oil painting reproduction that is sure to turn heads.
