Even though American artist Alfred Henry Maurer lived in Paris and studied the great realists that came before him, he was dedicated to following his interest in more contemporary art styles. Foraying into cubism, favism and modernism as a whole, Maurer eventually carved out his own techniques that took elements from them all. He was particularly interested in contemporary landscape painting, and wanted to create natural depictions that starkly diverted from reality. Unfortunately, Maurer’s bold artistic experimentation was not admired or appreciated in France, which marginalized him from the inner circle of Parisian artists. Fenced Landscape is an excellent example of Maurer’s early experimentation with modernist techniques, as it was painted circa 1910, not long after he deviated from realism. The vibrant colors and flowing brushstrokes make it a sight to behold on any wall.
