Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt was perhaps best-known for his erotic portrayals of women in his nude paintings, with abstract geometrics peppering the background. Klimt’s Moving Water is exemplary of the artist’s early symbolist work. According to the Klimt Museum, the artist painted Moving Water sometime between 1889 and 1907, and was likely to have been inspired by Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold, a musical drama that was shown at the opera house in Vienna around that time. It is believed that Klimt intended to depict the Rhein daughters from the drama in this work. The painting is also closely associated with Klimt’s Fakultätsbildern; four paintings that decorate the ceiling of the Great Festival Hall at the University of Vienna, and shares a similar style.
