Degas’ Musicians in the Orchestra is a view of the ballet from the perspective of the orchestra itself. The original version of this oil on canvas work can be found today at a museum in Germany. However, thanks to our talented artists, you can own a near-exact replica of your own. There is great contrast in this painting between the light of the dancers on the stage and the dark of the musicians’ backs. Another noteworthy contrast is between the older men in the orchestra and the young women on stage. And while the musicians are depicted in careful detail, the dancers, in comparison, are much sketchier and harder to make out. This painting is also unique in that it shows an actual performance, rather than goings-on behind the scenes, which was a popular theme with Degas.
