Nearly 30 years in the making, “November, Washington Square” by Edward Hopper is one of his many paintings that reflects on urban development and changing cityscapes. This Edward Hopper painting for sale at overstockArt was completed in 1959 but actually begun in 1932 after he and his wife moved to a new unit in their Washington Square North apartment. The resulting painting is of Hopper’s new view of the square and of the new buildings being rapidly built at the time. Two large Washington Square apartment buildings were erected in the late 1920s, and here Hopper symbolizes how they tower over the elegant buildings that came before. Coupled with the bronze autumn colors and bare foreground tree branches associated with the late-fall month, and you have a striking visage of the Depression-era neighborhood – especially when paired with the summery sky added later.
