Claude Monet painted Poppy Field Near Vetheuil in 1879 shortly after moving to the village with his family. It was painted during a very difficult time and the strong colors show a depth of emotion in them. The contrast between the broad blue and white strokes in the sky, with the dabbled pattern of the red poppies shows his varied skill with a brush. The vivid red is what catches the eye first, but when you look closer you can see the figures moving among the wildflowers adding life to the landscape. In the background he has added a tranquil looking village and tall trees to add more detail to the setting.
