One of the major artists of his generation, Amedeo Modigliani is most popularly known for portraits and figure studies. The bohemian painter’s works form a bridge between the generation of Toulouse-Lautrec and the Art Deco painters of the 1920s. Anna Zborovska, the subject of this work, was the wife of Modigliani’s art dealer and appeared in several of his paintings. One of his other graceful portraits of her sold for over $12 million at auction in June of 2016. The classically simple, flat forms, elongated proportions and delicate stylization combine influences from African sculpture to Botticelli style.
