In yet another depiction of a ballet scene, Degas’ Repetition of the Dance is noteworthy in its dramatic play of dark and light, as well as of light and shadow. The dancer’s white dress makes a sharp contrast to the black ribbon around her neck, as well as the shadows that gather behind her. Degas has once again executed a dancer’s pose in very precise detail as she practices for a show and other dancers congregate in the background for their own preparations. The center figure’s costume, however, is really the focal point in this 20″ x 24″ oil painting on canvas. The original was completed in 1877.
