The Rough Sea at Etretat was painted by the impressionist master Claude Monet in 1869. A stormy sea on a stark, cold day makes for an utterly captivating scene in this painting. It continues to have a haunting and mysterious quality to this day. Monet used his Impressionist techniques to capture the powerful forces of nature, including craggy cliffs, swirling sea water and gusts of wind. Simple brushstrokes take on significance as the scene seems to roar with the waves and wind even as you silently gaze upon it. The stoic use of the blue and gray make the entire scene serious but beautiful.
