Although best known for his overtly erotic paintings of the female body and other allegorical work, Gustav Klimt regularly painted landscapes. In fact, he painted a large collection of landscapes of Lake Attersee, the largest lake in Salzkammergut, Austria. For Klimt, Schloss Kammer on Attersee and other landscape paintings represented a break in the pressures of his typical commissioned work and allowed him the freedom to experiment and hone his techniques. Created in 1910, this work honors Klimt’s foray into landscape painting but also honors a fascination with architecture.
