Degas’ Seated Dancer in Profile is a gorgeous blue painting with a dancer in sweeping black outlines. It’s another of his many works that focuses on dancers and intimate behind-the-scenes looks at their lives. Unlike some of his more popular paintings of dancers, Seated Dancer in Profile is quite minimal in style, with the focal point being the dancer’s torso as she adjusts her hair. Her blue skirt seems to flow right into the scene itself, making it difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins. Another common theme in this painting, as in the rest of Degas’ work, is that she does not look at the viewer, but rather off into the distance. The original can be found at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. It was completed in 1873. Our reproduction measures 20″ x 24″.
