Currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Edgar Degas’ The Dance Class (1874) is a wholly unique example of Degas’ work: it still showcases the artist’s favorite subject – ballet dancers – but is done in a modern style less common to the artist. The scene is set in the rehearsal room of the old Paris Opera, where ballet master Jules Perrot conducts the class. A poster for Rossini’s Guillame Tell hangs in the background, which pays tribute to the singer Jean-Baptiste Faure, who commissioned the painting. Degas was a French artist most famous for his prolific paintings covering the subject of dance. He was a passionate photographer as well, and often used his photographs of dancers as reference for his dance paintings.
