Published in 1884 during the Second Empire, horseracing had become a popular gathering place for the fashionable society of Paris and their aristocrats. Although racing was often the subject for press articles and prints, Manet’s unique approach to perspective allows for the excitement and thrill of the moment to be felt where other illustrations featured a traditional lateral view of the horses. The viewer is placed in the middle of the racetrack with gestural lines to emphasize the speed and chaos of the moment, almost as if they’re about to be run over. This piece is a lithograph print using the chine collé technique, where the original drawing is etched then bonded to a piece of paper to create a sense of depth within the piece.
