Description
Renoir paints this radiant landscape of the Seine with carefully differentiated brushwork. Long, feathery strokes of the waving grasses make their way into small, thick touches for the flowering trees. The Maison Fournaise, opened by Alphonse Fournaise in the 1850s, was a favorite spot of Renoir’s in Chatou and he probably visited there while he was painting The Seine At Chatou. It was a beautiful restaurant, hotel and boat hire business and a number of Renoir’s other artworks were painted there.
