Vincent van Gogh moved to Arles in February of 1888, where he painted this landscape that same year. He was tired of the cold, Paris city and yearned for the colors he painted in Provence. He had told his brother Theo he would rest in Arles and move on to Marseille, but the beautify country landscape captivated him. It was during this period of Van Gogh’s life that he modernized his style and genre, seen in his bold colors and dynamic brushstrokes.
