Claude Monet studied water lilies for years, finding them to be endlessly fascinating and challenging. One of the ways he kept his approach fresh was to paint the lilies in different lighting. In “Water Lilies, Evening,” created in 1897, darker tones create a unique feeling when compared to other portraits of the same flowers in other pieces by the artist. This zoomed-in view of the lilies is breathtaking and dramatic since it includes the rich and complex blues reflected in the water as well as the simple textures of the cream colored water lily blooms and soft green leaves. “Water Lilies, Evening” is a beautiful piece on its own, but it’s also a lovely addition to any collection of Monet’s other water lily paintings.
