Description

Claude Monet painted Weeping Willow 1918 while visiting the French countryside. Like so many of his other works, this landscape was part of a series of paintings of an identical subject. The setting of this piece shows the willow tree in his garden which was positioned right next to the iconic pond of water lilies. Some scholars believe the painting depicts turmoil, due to the ‘weeping’ nature of this tree, with its dramatic rising and falling, as well as the uncharacteristically dark brushwork. The ambiguity of not showing the horizon line or a clear vanishing point of perspective makes for an interesting and unusual composition. Elongated, curving strokes capture the tree’s curves. Note also the cooler blues tones hidden among the green leaves and the warm reds incorporated into the trees trunk. A fascinating outlier amidst the work of a great artist, this handcrafted Monet reproduction painting is truly unique.
