One of Degas’ favorite themes was women emerging from baths, as depicted in his After the Bath IV. Oftentimes, these paintings include women in awkward positions as they climb or strain. He said he wanted to create the feeling that the viewer was looking upon these women as if from a keyhole. This woman appears to shake her feet dry as she completes her post-bath ritual. Degas was fascinated by movement and really perfected his technique in the hundreds of examinations he completed of dancers from the Paris stage. The female nude is a popular theme throughout the history of Western art, but Degas really ushered it into the 20th century with his own unique spin. Our beautiful reproduction measures 24″ x 36″.
