A woman dries her hair after bathing in Degas’ After the Bath. This is a familiar scene for Degas. Throughout his career, he completed hundreds of portraits of women, often in highly intimate situations such as this. The women never look directly at the viewer, which gives the observer the sense of peering in upon a private moment. Degas invites us to explore a potentially taboo subject through a voyeuristic lens. In addition, these moments often reveal the figure’s true character. Degas was also a master of movement, depicting limbs and motion with amazing detail and accuracy. The woman featured in After the Bath, like the furniture in her room, is not rendered in precise detail but rather muted tones that sort of blend into each other.
