Sunflowers, Red is a handcrafted re-imagining of Vincent Van Gogh’s timeless original, Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers. The vibrant red addition in this La Pastiche original really pops, giving striking contrast to an original that was primarily monochrome. The 1888 original was the final distinct piece in Van Gogh’s series of sunflower paintings, to be followed only by additional copies of earlier images. His intent was to create a half dozen paintings of the subject, with simple brush strokes and matte yellows and blues. Though he never finished the series due to changing seasons and a later mental breakdown, they were meant to decorate the walls of the Yellow House in Arles where he and Gauguin painted.
